Cause for the Canonization of Cora Evans Progresses to Rome

Sunday, January 22, Cathedral of San Carlos, Monterey, California: we were all moved by the solemnity of the closing session for a sainthood cause, an event that made us all feel directly connected to the rich spiritual heritage of the Church.

Fr. Dennis McManus narrated the proceeding. He called on Bishop Daniel Garcia who declared this Diocesan Inquiry in the Cause of Beatification and Canonization of the Servant of God Cora Evans “definitively closed.”

Standing and speaking into a microphone, each member of the tribunal took the prescribed oath that they have faithfully fulfilled their duties and maintained the secrecy of office. The last phrase of the oath, “May God assist me.”

Bishop Garcia read and signed the decree appointing our Rome postulator, Dr. Emanuele Spedicato, JCD, carrier responsible for the delivery of the Acts to the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints. Spedicato read his oath to faithfully fulfill the charge entrusted to him.

Authentication: During the ceremony, the final signed documents were added to the Acts of the Inquiry. One copy, the original, will remain in the Diocese of Monterey. Two additional copies are sent to Rome. The white boxes that house the Acts were closed and wrapped with red ribbon. Red wax was applied to each box and stamped with the Diocesan seal. This assures the Vatican that the documents they receive are identical to the original.

The “Acts of the Inquiry” were shipped to the Apostolic Nuncio, Archbishop Christophe Pierre, in Washington D.C. From there it travels as a Diplomatic Package directly to the Vatican’s Dicastery for the Causes of Saints.

Soon there will be a formal opening of the Acts in the Vatican. The wax seal will be broken, the documentation reviewed and accepted, and the Rome phase of will begin. May God continue bless all who play a role as the cause moves forward.
